Imported and supported by McCarthy Holdings, the Chinese Foton Taxi and Foton Panel Van were introduced to South Africa in July 2007.
Beiqi Foton Motor Co ltd. is situated in Changping district of Beijing, founded in August 1996. Foton is one of Chinas largest auto manufacturers, producing LCV’s, MVC’s, HVC’s and buses. Ranked number 43 in the top 500 most valuable Chinese brands, the company has secured export business in Southern Asia, Northern Africa and the Gulf Region.
During August 2007, McCarthy launched a chain of McCarthy Value Centre’s and Independent Dealers to cater for the Value segment of the market. The Foton vehicles are available at these dealer outlets and are supported by a comprehensive McCarthy Service Network which are country wide wholly owned outlets.

Two Foton products, a taxi and a panel van, are on offer.
Durable, versatile and most of all, great value for money. The Foton Panel Van offers businesses and commercial operators a spacious and flexible cargo area, with a roomy and well-equipped cab. Specially tested on South African roads, the Foton Panel Van offers an affordable cargo transport alternative for any business.
The Foton Taxi is priced very competitively in the market. It is the only taxi in this price category that is fully compliant with the Taxi recapitalization programme for 2008. Regulations for this are:
- Hi-roof (1.5 metres interior height)
- Roll-over test
- Emergency exits
- Seat spacing requirements
- Roof hatch with effect in 18 months time
